VAPING NEWS: UK PARLIAMENT

“With a certain major hurdle now negotiated, the Houses of Parliament have found themselves able to engage in other matters, including getting vaping and tobacco harm reduction back on the table. Baroness Redfern wanted to know how vaping has impacted upon the health of the public, Ranil Jayawardena continues to raise problematic questions and Gareth Johnson wondered if Brexit means the EU Tobacco Products Directive will be lifted.”

VAPING NEWS: SOUTH AFRICA [Regulations & Vape Taxes]

“E-cigarettes don’t fall under the current Tobacco Products Control Act. Technically, they fall under the Medicines and Related Substances Act of 1965. They are supposed to be registered with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority and sold by prescription only. In practice they are not being marketed as a way to stop smoking, but rather as a consumer product. A new tobacco control bill published by the South African health department suggests regulating e-cigarettes as tobacco products. There are three possible ways to deal with e-cigarettes: banning them, regulating them and taxing them.”

VAPING NEWS: WHO [Blatant Anti-Vaping Misinformation]

“The chasm grew even wider last week when the new WHO warnings promoted a strong reaction from public health experts in the United Kingdom, who argued that the WHO was spreading “blatant misinformation” about the potential risks and benefits of e-cigarettes. “There is no evidence that vaping is ‘highly addictive’,” Peter Hajek, director of the tobacco dependence research unit at London’s Queen Mary Hospital said. “Less than 1 per cent of non-smokers become regular vapers. Vaping does not lead young people to smoking – smoking among young people is at [an] all-time low. There is clear evidence that e-cigarettes help smokers quit,” he added. According to John Britton, director of the UK Centre for Tobacco & Alcohol Studies and a consultant in respiratory medicine at the University of Nottingham, “WHO misrepresents the available scientific evidence”.”

VAPING NEWS: BETHLEHEM, NEW YORK [Replace Vape Shops With Marijuana Stores]

“Town is considering if tobacco, vape shops could then be converted to marijuana sales in future. Town is considering if tobacco, vape shops could then be converted to marijuana sales in future. New York state is currently considering legalizing recreational marijuana. The moratorium extension says there needs to be more discussion about options, considering that “vapor products cannot be considered separately from tobacco products” and “that the sale of marijuana products will be an easy transition for tobacco and vapor retailers.””

BILL TARLING – E-liquid Vapor Products have no relation to cigarettes, smoking, cannabis, or their markets. They’re entirely different industries and customer bases. To say that one industry should simply change its entire product and market to unrelated products and industries shows how ignorant the town board are about the products they’re even deciding to regulate or ban.

VAPING NEWS: WAIPĀ, NEW ZEALAND [Public Ban]

“The Waipā mayor believes he has the numbers to declare the district’s public places smoke-free within the next couple of months. But defining smoke-free areas and what penalties people might face still needs to be calculated when the Waipā District Council resumes in February. VAPING NEWS: DERRIFORD HOSPITAL, UK [Vaping Permitted]

“Health managers have decided to allow vaping in the grounds of Devon’s largest hospital. Derriford could also start issuing disposable e-cigarettes as part of its drive to cut levels of smoking. The plans would see the external area at the hospital becoming “vape-friendly” but signage will request people to avoid entrances and bus stops. Professor John Newton, director of health improvement at PHE, said: “There is no situation where it would be better for your health to continue smoking rather than switching completely to vaping.”

VAPING NEWS: ALTRIA + JUUL

“Altria Inc took another $4 billion charge on its investment in Juul Labs Inc and said it had reworked its deal terms with the embattled e-cigarette maker, which is facing increased regulatory scrutiny amid a backlash against vaping. Altria said it would stop providing services including logistics, distribution and access to retail shelf space to Juul, while also outlining a plan to reshuffle the company’s board once regulators complete the anti-trust probe related to the deal. It will only help Juul with regulatory affairs services including the submission of its products for approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the company added.”

VAPING NEWS: KENTUCKY [Vape Tax]

“Kentucky lawmakers are considering putting an excise tax on e-cigarettes sold in the Commonwealth. The tax would be equal to the current tax on traditional cigarettes. State Rep. Jerry Miller, R-Louisville, the bill’s primary sponsor, said his colleagues are struggling to come up with a state budget amid the worst projected revenue growth in decades, largely attributable to tax cuts. He said House Bill 32 would bring in much-needed state revenue. According to the latest Kentucky Health Issues Poll, three out of four Kentucky adults approve taxing e-cigarettes and vaping products. That support includes 78% of Democrats, 76% of Republicans and 72% of independent voters.”

VAPING NEWS: MARYLAND [Vape Tax & Flavor Ban]

“The American Lung association said, Maryland is on the right track to stopping the trend, but it needs to do more. That includes removing all flavored tobacco products from the market. Another way the state is working to lower tobacco usage is to increase the tobacco tax. Senate Bill Three would not only raise the tax by $2 but will make sure that the taxes are the same for every tobacco or vaping product.”
