VAPING NEWS: NETHERLANDS [Plain Packaging]

“Any cigarette and shag tobacco products sold in shops around the Netherlands may only be provided in muddy-colored brown and green packaging beginning on Thursday. From 2022, the policy is also slated to take effect for cigar and e-cigarette packaging. This policy was put in place to prevent manufacturers from successfully marketing their products to younger people by using flashy colors, cartoon characters, heroic imagery and stylized logos. “So you no longer see the well-known logos of camels or cowboys. The color was selected because research showed that the particular shade of color creates a negative impulse in consumers, and could deter smokers from making the purchase.”

VAPING NEWS: WVA RESPONSE TO DECEPTIVE SCHEER REPORT

“The World Vapers’ Alliance (WVA) has fired off a rapid response to the report published by the EU Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER). We reported on the committee’s “preliminary opinion on electronic cigarettes” yesterday, highlighting a number of glaring faults and its reliance on corrupt research purporting to be science. It relied on fraudulent and pseudoscientific findings made by the likes of David Bareham, Jessica Barrington-Trimis, and Stanton Glantz.”

VAPING NEWS: HONG KONG [Arrest For Possession Of Vape Products]

“The Department of Health (DH) and the Police yesterday (September 29) conducted a joint operation against the illegal possession of nicotine-containing liquids intended for use with electronic nicotine delivery systems, commonly known as e-cigarettes. Acting upon a public complaint, the DH raided a retail store in Sham Shui Po and found a number of brands of liquids for use in e-cigarettes labelled with nicotine contents, including the brands HUANXI, RELX, GENTLE and SECRET. The maximum penalty for each offence is a fine of $100,000 and two-years’ imprisonment.”

VAPING NEWS: FDA [JUUL PMTA]

“Vaping giant Juul submitted its premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) to the Food and Drug Administration earlier this month. What happens if the agency denies Juul permission to keep selling its products? It would be an opening for other tobacco players. Should the FDA decide that Juul products have to be removed from the market, she estimates that would leave about $1 billion in revenue up for grabs. A decision against Juul would help British American Tobacco, which Azer estimates could see its market share more than double, to 58% from 24%.”

VAPING NEWS: DENMARK [Flavour Ban]

“The Danish government notified the European Commission that it planned to ban flavoured eliquids as part of its quest to stop teens smoking. The move defied logic and evidence, inspiring consumer organisations, vapers and advocates across Europe to inundate the Commission with objections directed at the politicians involved. Denmark dropped the proposal but has just announced it plans to press ahead regardless. Mikkel Schmidt responded by warning: “Calling all EU vapers! Denmark is setting a dangerous precedent for a flavour ban, by sneaking it by the EU Commission during the peak of a pandemic. We need to stop this now!” Denmark’s countdown clock to the flavour ban on April 1, 2021 continues.”

VAPING NEWS: UKRAINE [Sales To Minors]

“The Verkhovna Rada adopted at first reading a government bill banning the sale of electronic cigarettes to persons under the age of 18, at the same level as traditional tobacco products. Relevant bill No.3628 on amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine concerning strengthening the liability for offenses in selling electronic cigarettes and liquids used in electronic cigarettes to minor children was supported by 272 MPs at a meeting on Tuesday. In addition, it is proposed to introduce liability for the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors and the liquids used in them.”

VAPING NEWS: EU [Commission Accepts Fabricated Pseudo Studies, Dismisses Actual Scientific Studies]

“The European Commission and its Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) has published its “preliminary opinion on electronic cigarettes” – and it isn’t very good. The Committee has been quite unfair in the past and the latest document does little to correct this position. Some might wonder how any self-respecting scientist could possibly reach conclusions such as these. The answer is that, like last week’s article on the World Health Organization, they include work by the likes of the exceptionally limited David Bareham, the rabidly idiotic Jessica Barrington-Trimis, and the scientific fraud Stanton Glantz.”

VAPING NEWS: COLORADO [Vape Tax]

“The bill was negotiated between Democratic lawmakers, Gov. Jared Polis’ office, health advocates and the Altria Group, one of the world’s largest tobacco companies. Altria is the maker of Marlboro cigarettes and a major investor in the vaping brand Juul. By July 2027, nicotine products would be taxed at 62% of their market list price.”

BILL TARLING — There’s no explanation why a tobacco company was included in the negotiations while vape companies were excluded. As well, note that “Modified-Risk Tobacco Products” [e.g. IQOS Heat Sticks] will only be charged 21% tax rate by 2027 compared to vapor products being charged 62% tax (same as cigarettes), so the tax on vape products will be almost triple — AND the Modified-Risk current rate of 40% tax is being lowered to 15% while e-cigs are starting off raised to 30%

VAPING NEWS: HAMILTON, NEW ZEALAND [Public Vaping Ban]

“Vaping could soon join smoking as a forbidden activity in city streets and parks in Hamilton. The Hamilton City Council is set to revisit the issue of banning vaping at a meeting of its community committee on Tuesday, which could result in the organisation belatedly following the lead of other councils around the country – including the Hauraki and Matamata-Piako district councils – that have amended their Smokefree policies to include vaping.”
