A BATTERY MOOCH POST: Different cell for iJoy 20700!

It appears that iJoy has changed what cell they wrap for their 20700.

I’ve done some preliminary testing and, so far, the news is not good. The newer 20700 performs worse than the original one. See the attached discharge graph.

I’ll be doing more testing but it appears to be a 15A-20A cell with a capacity rating of about 2800mAh with a lot of voltage sag.

My sincere thanks to James Burr of Evolution Vaping (UK) for bringing this to my attention and for express shipping some to me here in NYC! I also want to thank the others who alerted me too.

These new iJoy 20700’s are easily spotted since they have four “legs” coming down from the top contact instead of the five in the original cell iJoy used.

The ones I received were taken from Captain mod kits but others have said they received them in Genie kits and in orders from IMRBatteries. My recent order from IMRBatteries had the five leg versions of them though.

EBAT, Ampking, and Efest used the same better performing 20700 iJoy originally did, with the five leg top contact. I do not know if these companies will be switching to the four leg cell too.

Evolution Vaping (UK) has only five leg iJoy 20700’s in stock for separate purchase. I do not know who else has them in stock. Vendors, feel free to comment below.

Thanks to two members of our community I am receiving more of the new four leg cells next week and will be thoroughly testing them. I should have the results by the end of next week.

My messages to iJoy regarding these cells have gone unanswered but there is a holiday in China this week and I’m not surprised they haven’t responded yet.

I’ll post an update as I get more info.

FROM GREG CONLEY – Major U.S. Study: Vaping Could Save 6.6 Million American Smokers

Major U.S. Study: Vaping Could Save 6.6 Million American Smokers

Even under worse case assumptions, vaping still saves lives, finds multi-university research study

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In what could turn out to be a transformative moment in the debate over vaping in America, a research team led by investigators from Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is now estimating that vaping could save the lives of up to 6.6 million U.S. smokers over the next 10 years. On the basis of this evidence, the researchers are recommending that public health organizations adopt a strategy of encouraging smokers to switch to vaping to hasten the decline of America’s smoking rate.

Published in the journal Tobacco Control, the study is the first to model the best and worst case outcomes of U.S. smokers switching to vaping. In establishing their variables, the researchers considered a range of factors, including differing estimates on the relative harm of vapor products versus cigarettes, as well as the impact of vaping on cessation, switching, and initiation, including by nonusers.

In the most pessimistic scenario tested by the researchers, a strategy of replacing cigarettes with vaping is calculated to save 1.6 million lives, or 160,000 lives per year. (Read Reuters’ report on the study).

“Even the gloomiest analysis shows a significant gain in years of life if nicotine is obtained from vaping instead of much more deadly amount of toxicants inhaled with cigarette smoke,” said David Levy, a lead researcher and professor of oncology at Georgetown Lombardi. “Old policies need to be supplemented with policies that encourage substituting e-cigarettes for the far more deadly cigarettes.”

The study, which involved researchers from Georgetown University, Yale University, the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and others, was funded by the National Institutes of Health. In total, the researchers conclude that as many as 86.7 million years of life could be gained by smokers who make the switch during the ten year period modeled in the study.

Gregory Conley, President of the American Vaping Association, a nonprofit that champions vaping for smokers looking to quit, commented on the implications of the study:

“This study could represent a seismic shift in the way the FDA and public health groups look at vaping. For years, harm reduction advocates have relied on quality research from independent European researchers and non-government organizations, only to be told that such research was somehow not trustworthy because the authors were not American. Now, we have some of the most respected American researchers in the field of tobacco control explaining in detail how vaping can and will save lives.”

“If there is a fault with this research, it is that it assumes that a functional vaping market will still exist in a decade. Unless FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb acts to reform the FDA’s outdated tobacco regulatory system, over 99% of vapor products could be banned in or before 2022. We are hopeful that studies like this will give Gottlieb the confidence he needs to truly modernize the way FDA regulates smoke-free nicotine products.”

Other research highlights from this week

  • Banning e-cigarette flavors, with or without a corresponding ban on menthol cigarettes, could harm public health by discouraging adult smokers from quitting. That is according to research conducted by the Yale School of Public Health and the Centre for Health Policy at the Imperial College in London, the results of which are being distributed the National Bureau of Economic Research. (MarketWatch coverage).
  • Among young adults in the Chicago area, e-cigarette use was not associated with later cigarette smoking, according to research published by the journalAddiction

About the American Vaping Association

The American Vaping Association is a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies that encourage the growth and sustainability of small- and medium-sized businesses in the rapidly growing vaping and electronic cigarette industry. The AVA was founded by Gregory Conley, a consumer and industry advocate with a long track record of advocating for vapor products dating back to 2010.

We are dedicated to educating the public and government officials about public health benefits offered by vapor products, which are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid nicotine or nicotine-free solution and create an inhalable vapor.  The AVA is not a trade group and does not speak for any particular businesses, including our industry sponsors.

You can learn more about AVA and vaping by visiting the AVA website. You can also find us on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

From Stu

Still love getting these emails!
They all still get added to the Success Stories and Validations page.
They still keep me going!
Thank you Stu!

Hi Phil,

I thought, I’d send you an update to my email from all the way in Jan of 2014.

We very briefly spoke at CVE Toronto, but I’ll touch on a few things again. I recently passed my 5yr. mark free of cigarettes. Just over 2yrs. ago, I left my job at a “big box store” & got a job at a vape shop. I am now General Manager of our 2 locations.

For the first time in my life, I can say I love my job! From helping get new users setup to troubleshooting issues with advanced users. I’ve taking allot of what I have learned of the years, watching Grimm, Dimitris & yourself. Along with what I have learned myself over the years & used that to better help my customers, get the best possible service & advice. I’ve lost track, of the amount of setups. I’ve done over the years. Must be into the 100’s by now.

However, it’s not about praise. I do, what I do, because I love it. I’m not a super low ohm builder or a MTL user.
I’m perfectly happy with my Crown 3, Fuchai 213 & 3mg Dragon Juice from 416 Vapes (shout out to Rob & his crew).
I just want my gear to work, the way I expect it to, for me. I use that same logic with my customers & that’s something, I picked up from you, Phil.

So here we are 4yrs. after my first email & 5yrs. free of smokes. I have a great job, that I love & in an industry that I love. I could not have gotten, where I am today. Without the help & advice, I’ve gotten from yours, Dimitris & Nick’s video’s over the years. So once again, I want to send my deepest & heartfelt Thank you for what you do & continue to do, for vaping.

All the best, Phil
Stu

A BATTERY MOOCH POST: IronSmith 40A 2050mAh 18650…hugely overrated, VTC4 performs better + hits harder

This “40A” cell is overrated by a LOT. IronSmith’s rating is even useless as a “pulse” rating. The first pulse at 40A on a fully charged cell dropped the voltage to under 3.10V.

The 23A 2100mAh VTC4 easily outperforms the IronSmith cell. The VTC4 hits harder and runs for a bit longer.

I do not know what cell IronSmith is using. I thought it might be one of the LG HD Series cells because of its four “leg” top contact and ratings but the metal can and tooling marks don’t match any of the LG HD Series cells I have here. LG might have changed the can or it could be a China-manufactured cell.

IronSmith gave this cell a 7A charge rating. This is higher than the fast charge rate of any 18650 and is guaranteed to shorten the life of your battery. I recommend 2A charging maximum for long cell life.

I am rating this IronSmith at 25A and 2050mAh.

The two cells that were tested were donated for that purpose by IronSmith Group. Thank you!

THANK YOU DANIEL AKA DJLSB VAPES!

Daniel, AKA DJLsb Vapes, is really pissing me off.  His videos look far too good and will require me to do some updates.  I will be sending him the bill for any equipment upgrades that may be required.

I can assure you that there will be some breathtaking drone footage in my next video you will not want to miss.

In all honesty, we had an excellent time hanging out with Daniel and his wife in Pairs for VapeExpo 2017.  It was also fantastic for me and Dimitris to be able to share our new Innokin and Bromance projects with him.

I certainly appreciate Daniel digging into products and bringing you quality tech reviews.  I also appreciate being able to bounce ideas and experiences with him behind the scenes, not to mention the extended “Geek Talks” about all things tech outside the world of electronic cigarettes.

The video he put out below interviewing us came excellent and I sincerely thank him for it.

I don’t know Dimitris, there may be a new “Bromance” going on. 😉

A BATTERY MOOCH POST: AWT 35A 3500mAh 18650…laughably overrated, only an 8A battery, do not buy

This “35A” cell is so overrated I am again at a loss for words. This AWT appears identical, and performs almost identical, to the not-so-great performing Samsung 35E. I rated that Samsung at 8A.

AWT’s 35A rating is even useless as a “pulse” rating. The first pulse at 35A on a fully charged cell dropped the voltage to under 3.0V.

The wrap has “IMR 18650” on it but this cell does not use the battery chemistry often associated with the IMR model number prefix. It uses the chemistry associated with the INR prefix.

I feel strongly that each of us is free to buy whichever batteries we want but I urge you to consider whether or not you want to support a company like this.

I am rating this AWT at 8A and 3500mAh. For best performance I recommend not using this cell at over about 5A, 15W-20W or so.

The two cells that were tested were purchased for that purpose by me.

A BATTERY MOOCH POST: AWT Black 50A 3000mAh 18650…obscenely overrated, do not buy

This “50A” cell is so overrated I am at a loss for words. It is a Sony VTC6 rewrap, performing and appearing identically to that cell. I rated the VTC6 at 15A

AWT has three 3000mAh rewraps, with the true ratings ranging from 15A-20A. AWT rated them though at 35A, 40A, and 50A. I am appalled at the extent of the rating exaggeration that AWT is using to entice us to buy their batteries.

I feel strongly that each of us is free to buy whichever batteries we want but I urge you to consider whether or not you want to support a company like this.

I am rating this AWT at 15A and 3000mAh.

The two cells that were tested were purchased for that purpose by me.
