 “Restrictions on the sale of flavored tobacco products were not associated with a decrease in current or ever e-cigarette use among high school students in the California Bay Area one-year after their implementation, according to a new study. The researchers concluded that flavored vape bans “did not significantly change” the odds of current and ever e-cigarette use among students. Vapor industry advocates contend that flavor bans have negative consequences for public health because flavors are essential for adults trying to quit smoking. State finances are impacted by flavor bans as well. For example, Massachusetts’ ban on flavored vaping and tobacco products is costing the state an estimated $10 million in revenues each month, according to Americans for Tax Reform.”

ABOUT DR. COLIN:

He is a member of the Smoking Cessation Guideline Expert Advisory Group that develops the RACGP Australian national smoking cessation guidelines. He is the Founding Chairman of the Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association, a registered health promotion charity dedicated to raising awareness of low-risk nicotine products as a substitute for smoking for smokers who can’t quit.

He is the author of a book, Stop Smoking Start Vaping.

He was a Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of New South Wales until 2020. He was also a past Vice President of the Australian Association of Smoking Cessation Professionals, Australia’s peak body for experts in the field of smoking cessation.

He has never received funding from e-cigarette or tobacco companies.
